You wish that the film stayed with Shakuntala the maths genius a little more. It would have been nice to delve into the process with which Shakuntala did what she did, even though she had no clue: numbers just spoke to her. The fact that she had political ambitions (she stood for elections, and fought Indira Gandhi in Medak for a Lok Sabha seat) is papered over briefly; a little more focus on her now-affectionate-now-thorny relationship with the father of her daughter would have shed light on why she wrote a book on homosexuality, the first of its kind in India.

Vidya Balan gets under the skin of her character and simply aces it in the titular role – she gives an unrestrained performance as Shakuntala Devi from the 1950s to 2000s which is captivating to watch, as every stage of her life unfolds. Jisshu Sengupta as the suave and sensitive Paritosh is a delight to watch and Amit Sadh as Anupama’s supportive husband, Ajay makes an impact even with his limited screen time.

There is enough material here for a franchise – I think her book called The World of Homosexuals, in which she made a case for gay rights in the 1970s, could be a film in itself. Such a rich and varied life is a daunting job for a storyteller. Director Anu Menon and co-screenplay writer Nayanika Mahtani make the unwise decision of trying to squeeze all of it in. The result is an uneven film, in which we get a frantically busy plot but not enough dramatic thrust.

SHAKUNTALA DEVI begins on a dramatic note, at a time when the grown-up Anupama announces that she’s going to sue her own mother. It immediately catches attention and makes one curious. The film then goes on a flashback mode depicting Shakuntala’s life as a child and how her mathematical prowess was discovered. The scene where she does her first maths show in a local school is interesting. Things however get better when she moves to London. The scene where she horrifies her male roommates about what she did with her boyfriend brings the house down.

All said and done, though Shakuntala Devi has Vidya Balan’s performance as a big positive, it also comes with many glitches. If you don’t watch this as a biopic, there’s a better chance you won’t nitpick as many things as I did.
