And yet it’s impossible to overlook the script’s old-fashioned, and frankly outdated worldview when it comes to parent-child politics. We’re in 2020 and Indian parents – certainly according to this film – will continue to emotionally blackmail and guilt their kids into doing exactly what they want.

Homi Adajania’s direction is so-so. While the craft is good, Homi has not been able to camouflage the drawbacks of the script. As such, his narration, like the script, make the drama very class-appealing. Sachin-Jigar’s music is fair; there’s no song which stands out. The duo’s background music ought to have been more effective

The look and feel of this comedy-drama is all things sweet and small-town – the actors consistently carry a thick local accent (Radhika’s sounds a bit forced though) and close attention has been paid to what we call a ‘small-town traits’ that beautifully plays out in multiple scenes and sequences as the story progresses.

Irrfan is returning to acting after a long break due to a health scare. He seems to have grown as an artiste in this time away from the public eye. He is so consumed by his character that the strain of doing an accent never once shows, nor does he, unlike many lesser actors in other films, allow that accent to overpower his sensitive performance.

On the whole, ANGREZI MEDIUM works only because of Irrfan Khan and Deepak Dobriyal’s chemistry and also due to some touching moments. At the box office, HINDI MEDIUM’s goodwill and Irrfan’s comeback will ensure decent footfalls for the movie over the weekend.
