Ankit Kapoor – The Times of India

Rating: 3/5

Deva is a commendable slow-burn thriller directed by Rosshan Andrrews, with its heart in the right place. Its slow pacing and misleading marketing might not appeal to everyone, particularly those looking for a fast-paced action movie. The dynamics between Dev and his friend Roshan D’Silva slightly overstretches, but their collective pursuit of powerful mafia dons keeps the momentum alive. As the mystery thickens in the second half, the tonality shifts from action to dark and intense emotions and mood. Dev struggles to navigate his world while dealing with memory loss, turning the movie into a slow burn 1.

Sucharita Tyagi – Medium

Deva is a story of a police officer Dev, 90% of whose personality is “main character energy”. Shahid Kapoor is the perfect actor for the role. At his own sister’s wedding, the song Dev makes everyone sing and dance to is “Deva Alaa Rey”. The film serves as a showcase for Shahid Kapoor’s talent, really. Second Dev A confronting his rich bestie, another cop, played by Pavail Gulati. Again, same guy, two different personalities. A better film would have been able to explore a deeper sentiment here, but Deva only serves as a showcase for Shahid Kapoor’s talent, really 2.

Aswin Bharadwaj – Lensmen Reviews

Rating: 2/5

Deva is a spineless, shuffled remake that forgot why the original worked. The urge to make Deva a Shahid Kapoor action film was so great that they added a jail fight sequence at the very end of the movie. While Mumbai Police was a complicated thriller and a character study, Deva just ends up looking like a lackluster hero-worshipping tale. The urge to make Deva a Shahid Kapoor action film was so great that they added a jail fight sequence at the very end of the movie 3.

The Hindu

Deva is a plain and convoluted restructuring of the director’s 2013 neo-noir psychological thriller Mumbai Police. The story unfolds plainly, the narrative is slower than a slow-burn and the reveals are diluted. Mumbai Police questioned the allure of the macho cop and the toxicity of male friendships but Deva restrains itself to rebelling against ideology-less politicians 4.

The Hollywood Reporter

Rating: 2/5

Deva is a diluted, labored retread of the 2013 Malayalam-language original, Mumbai Police. The biggest fault line is that the remake writers have expanded and changed the narrative to serve the stardom of its lead actor. The unkindest cut is that the ending has been changed, lessening its impact considerably. The climax in Deva is suitably grim, but the writers give Dev a convenient but not very convincing backstory to justify all that we have seen 5.
