John Stewart Eduri’s background score is brilliant and enhances the impact. Vishnu Rao’s cinematography is one of the best things about the film. The locales of Udaipur have been captured like never before. Shashank Tere’s production design is convincing as well as appealing. Monisha R Baldawa’s editing is slick. Manish Malhotra, Natascha Charak, Nikita Mohanty’s costumes are impressive.

The strength of Dhadak lies in its brimming freshness and innocence. That this film presents the new faces of Ishaan (one film old) and Janhvi (who marks her debut in Bollywood) works in the favour of its narrative.

Barring a few patches, Dhadak has neither requisite drama nor authenticity. It underlines all its scenes with blaring background music, to tell us how to feel. It doesn’t work, not as an official copy of Sairat, nor as a standalone Bollywood romance. There is, I’m afraid, no ‘dhak dhak’ in this Dhadak.

In Dhadak, Madhukar’s sidekicks are Gokul (Ankit Bisht) and Parshuram (television’s ‘tiny man’ Shridhar Watsar), who is charged with providing comic relief. Beyond that, the duo contributes precious little to the plot – the Dalit-Muslim-differently abled axis is done away with, and what is left of it is employed only for a largely superficial purpose.

The issues crop up with the backdrop where the film is set and the dialect. There are scenes where Janhvi’s dialogues seem to fumble and she gets out of the character. The same holds true for Ishaan where the Rajasthani dialect goes missing and you are left wondering if that is Shahid Kapur speaking. The second half rambles on into an incoherent climax. Don’t go expecting the Sairat experience and you won’t be disappointed.
