But The Secrets of Dumbledore is more about the two wizards than the two men, and hence in the diverse corners they occupy — one to capture the world and the other to save it — the film is full of side characters. The repeat ones include the still painfully awkward Eddie Redmayne as Newt, and the reliable Dan Fogler as his friend Jacob. Among others, Callum Turner as Newt’s brother Theseus is the most impressive, bringing an assured confidence to the role, that is a good foil to Newt.

Don’t let the title excite you. The Secrets of Dumbledore aren’t as mysterious as one may want to believe. That backstory follows the usual strained past family tropes. The emotional core of the story is predictable and generic. It’s the humour and misadventures that make this film an interesting watch and way superior to the previous (second) instalment. Team Dumbledore’s shenanigans and the film’s visual mastery manage to transport you to a different time and place.

The Secrets Of Dumbledore opens with a promise of showing you two lovers being pitched against each other and the anticipation of the great war between them. But what we rather get is 3 minutes of light show from their respective wands that ends on them feeling each other’s heartbeats (don’t you dare criticise Karan Johar ever Potterheads). You know I am talking about Albus and Gellert’s iconic love story. There is so much juice. They are connected not just by love but even blood. But nothing gets the focus and a story it deserves.

A mention has to be made for George Richmond who looks into the cinematography, with sweeping yet captivating visuals the viewer is planted firmly in their seats. If that was not enough, be sure that the viewers are treated to stunning visuals reminiscent of the visuals from the Potter series that depict vast landscapes across the magical universe. Stuart Craig and Neil Lamont’s costume design keeps in line with the previous two films maintaining a sense of uniformity. In fact, the duo along with Colleen Atwood have done well to depict the 1930’s era in terms of costumes, styling and setting.

“Dasvi is a well-intentioned film. In contemporary scenario, it has become more and more crucial to have people with good education in political system. Abhishek Bachchan has a ball playing the role of Gangaram Chaudhary. It is a typical character in many ways, but Junior Bachchan makes it enjoyable with his flamboyance, natural flair for comedy and dialogues. But the writers hardly do anything to elevate the character to the next level, which is sad.”
