Which is a shame because there is a lot to appreciate in Gulabo Sitabo, chief among them Amitabh Bachchan’s winning portrayal of Mirza. Hunched over, dressed in filthy kurtas and too-short pyjamas, sporting a Santa beard and a potato-sized nose, Bachchan vanishes into the part. Mirza is single-minded to the point of being unscrupulous and the actor never holds back. Ayushmann sportingly lets his co-star do the heavy lifting, while nicely bringing out Baankey’s tough-on-the-outside-but-vulnerable-on-the-inside personality.

But the interactions between Bachchan and Khurrana, who come together for the first time, are flat. Bachchan’s Mirza, face hidden by a straggly white beard, thick glasses and a bulbous prosthetic nose, should have made us chuckle. That he is really a simpleton under all the grouchiness is a quirk left for too late, by someone having to say it out loud: Mirza comes off mannered, and laboured. Khurrana dives into his unlettered ‘aata chakki’ owner, and he can do ordinary so well, but there’s not much spark to his Baankey.

All said and done, Shoojit Sircar and Juhi Chaturvedi will capture you in the haveli for 120 minutes and make you watch the drama unfold. ‘Drama’ being the keyword here! Watch it for some mind-blowing performances & the rustic mood created by Sircar.

The narration of Gulabo Sitabo is smooth, if not flawless. The fine artistic details of the old haveli have been captured beautifully by cinematographer Avik Mukhopadhyay. The movie begins and ends with an almost similar scene, which I liked.
