Like a modern-day Goodfellas, the film introduces us with a large tracking shot of Dorothy (Wu) in the underbelly of the big city, and much like that Martin Scorsese movie, the story takes us through Dorothy’s introduction to an enigmatic senior personality, who shows her the ropes, and then entangles her in a criminal enterprise. The enigma in this case is of course Lopez, who plays Ramona, a veteran stripper who dabbles in a little crime to hustle wealthy, sleazy Wall Street men.

Dorothy always wants to please Ramona while Ramona promises to stay by her. They grow together, then apart, take each other for granted and split only to understand that sisterhood is forever.
What putts a dammer on things is even after the film being certified as ‘Adults Only’ in bold letters by CBFC, within five minutes we get several cuts with many beeps and mutes throughout the 108 minutes of Hustlers.

The story unfolds from Dorothy’s perspective in flashbacks, showing us how the duo went about their elaborate arrangement. Constance Wu isn’t as stirring as the lead role demands, but Jennifer Lopez gives one of her most memorable performances as the impeccably preserved ringleader Ramona. Despite the differences in their performances, their mentor-protégé friendship makes the most intriguing aspect of the film. The rest of the cast is barely serviceable, with most roles easily replaceable, especially the rich men who get scammed.
