Aditya Roy Kapur, Sonakshi Sinha and Sanjay Dutt play their parts well but the poor characterisation fails them after a point. Madhuri Dixit, on the other hand, makes her Bahaar Begum a little too caricaturish. She still appears to be stuck in the Devdas zone, which is a pity.

Kalank, in a nutshell, is a royal misfire. It’s a film that tries to accomodate too much but delivers little in the end.

Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Sanjay Dutt and Sonakshi Sinha chip in with moments of pitch-perfect drama, too. Kunal Kemmu as Zafar’s friend Abdul, brings in tension and thrills in his grey-shaded role. The joint efforts of the cast add the proverbial punch to the experience of ‘Kalank’.

There is enough and more here, plotwise, for a bunch of films. But finally, despite Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt’s histrionics (the former looking as if he could well belong to that era, and Bhatt staying watchable, if increasingly, exasperatingly familiar), and Dixit’s wondrous dancing abilities (nobody can touch her when it comes to the grace she displays when she is on the floor)

At the end of the day, Kalank is a sensory delight. It’s hard to not be awed by the grandeur of the film, the lavish couture on display and the easy-on-the-eyes star cast. However, it’s also equally hard to ignore the fact that the filmmaker could have easily done so much more with the resources and premise they had at their disposal.

Pritam’s music could have been much better. ‘Ghar More Pardesiya’ leaves impact followed by ‘Tabaah Ho Gaye’. The title track is relegated to the background. ‘First Class’ is catchy and ‘Rajvaadi Odhni’ is okay, but they come almost back to back. ‘Aira Gaira’ is forcefully added. Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara’s background score is dramatic and adds to the effect
