But the only time the film lifts off the screen is when Jammwal gets going, minus the weepy wife or the scenes in which he has to emote. A couple of strikingly choreographed fight-and-chase scenes hold our interest, especially one in which Jammwal is hemmed in a narrow corridor with a whole bunch of armed louts about to pound him into the ground.

In Bollywood, the essence of love is captured primarily through love ballads. And composers Amar Mohile and Mithun Sharma do not disappoint. ‘Jaan Ban Gaye’, ‘Mera Intezaar Karna’ and ‘Aakhri Kadam Tak’ are absolute musical delights. The background score, too, is one that intensifies the dread in serious scenes and softens the theme of fright in places where the duo is seen pining for one another.

Khuda Haafiz was extensively shot in Uzbekistan. Faruk and the DoP Jitan Harmeet Singh make good use of the landscape – from the singular architecture and sand-colored homes to the barren highways. At one point, we get a Mad Max-style chase with swirling clouds of dust. For a change, Vidyut is playing a savior who isn’t in superman mode. Sameer gets hurt and bleeds. He faints and even sheds tears. The story requires Vidyut to deliver a range of emotions. He pushes himself but is still most convincing when he is inflicting pain. Shivaleeka Oberoi, who plays Nargis, has little to do except first be childlike and naïve and then wait to be saved.

The actors playing the Arab characters – Shiv Pandit in particular – are erratic with their dialogue delivery. Despite the occasional diction-related slip-ups, Aahana Kumra gives a good account of herself. Shivaleeka Oberoi is done in by an underwritten role. Annu Kapoor, who gets a lion’s share of the footage apportioned to the supporting cast, makes it count.

The movie is set in 2008 and it should have released back then itself. A lot has changed in a decade, and especially in a time when women are taking charge and seen in the lead role, Vidyut heading the film, more importantly with fewer action scenes (which is what he does best) while the lead actress is simply a damsel in distress, is nothing but a disappointment. The songs, if not relevant to the scene, should also have been avoided, to focus more on the plotline at hand.
