Actually, scratch the last bit. Fun and games should have ensued. They do, and we smile to begin with, but soon we begin tiring. The length of the film begins weighing upon the plot, which starts stretching and flattening. A crisper plot and faster pace would have made Lootcase what it was aiming to be.

But “Lootcase” unravels in its final act, losing steam well before the finish line. At 2 hours and 13 minutes, it’s way too long; there’s just not enough plot to justify that running time. The climax is your standard Priyadarshan-style chaos of multiple characters and complete madness, although there is more bloodshed here that one tends to see in comedies. Also, it’s quite predictable how things will inevitably end, so there’s no real point in stretching the screenplay.

The three principal supporting actors – Vijay Raaz, Gajraj Rao and Ranvir Shorey – are an absolute hoot. Lootcase passes muster as long as one of them is on the screen. They are in supreme control as they lend a sparkle to the film that the script is unable to fully capitalize on.

The costume designers have done a fine job and so have the makeup artists. The film’s background score deserves applause and adds to its fun element.

The universe of director Rajesh Krishnan’s Lootcase is simple. And that’s what we love about it. After all, beauty lies in simplicity, right?

Vidya Balan gets under the skin of her character and simply aces it in the titular role – she gives an unrestrained performance as Shakuntala Devi from the 1950s to 2000s which is captivating to watch, as every stage of her life unfolds. Jisshu Sengupta as the suave and sensitive Paritosh is a delight to watch and Amit Sadh as Anupama’s supportive husband, Ajay makes an impact even with his limited screen time.Sanya Malhotra as the slightly older Anupama brings in poise to her character, although her teenage act doesn’t quite pass off that easily.
