Most of Anirudh’s songs end up as earworms, and their popularity before the release certainly helps the film’s cause. The background score mixes beautifully with the film but then usage of silence in a few places could have made the experience better. The lighting during a lot of portions remind us of Lokesh’s previous film Kaithi and it captures Vijay’s charm beautifully.

And while all this sounds great on paper, the film is less so. The plot points get familiar and so do the cinematic tropes of villain going after the hero’s loved ones. Even the action sequences hardly offer any thrill. The film is so overlong with the college portions hardly offering any emotional highs. And we get a bunch of supporting characters that are hardly significant.

Director Lokesh Kanagaraj lists out Kamal Haasan’s Nammavar in the filmography and you can definitely sense the inspiration. However, unlike the previous two Lokesh Kanagaraj films, you don’t get to see a strong content that takes the centre stage. Lokesh promised in his interviews that Master will be a 50% Vijay film and 50% Lokesh film, but it doesn’t seem like that. As a director, Lokesh definitely needs to be applauded for executing a project of this scale, but the packaging could have been more effective.

What works best in ‘Master’ is undoubtedly the screen presence, charisma and performances of the Thalapathy and the Makkal Selvan and the duo help cover up most of the flaws in the narration. The first half sets up the characters of both the principal characters which is engaging along with the songs and a few fun moments. The interval block featuring Vijay and VJS also packs a punch.
