None-the-less Rajamouli manages to pull off something people have been pining for – a commercial, action drama that will keep you thoroughly entertained – which it does. The length also doesn’t prove to be a hindrance, thanks to a tight screenplay. The VFX in certain portions could’ve been better. Jr NTR pulls off his career’s best performance. He’s charming as Bheem, especially in the emotional bits and his desperation to find Malli comes through well, so does his love for Ramaraju.

The three hours plus film, a patriotic saga set in British India in the 1920s, proves several things in one go. That, for Indian filmmakers and viewers, there will never be a greater, more durable fount of stories than the Ramayan and the Mahabharat. That, if you want to be really safe, you cast not just one super-star, but two of them. And that if you want big, you go only to Rajamouli, the biggest super-star of them all: the loudest ‘taalis’ were reserved for his blink-and-miss in the final credits.

RRR fancifully transforms one of the rebels with a cause into a personification of Lord Ram and his patient, forever-in-waiting life partner into Sita – that is the name that the character played by Alia Bhatt goes by. His fights take place in and around forest areas – in the climax, he trades British guns and bullets for a good old set of bow and arrows – but no mention is ever made of land forcibly taken away and rights trampled upon.

S.S. Rajamouli’s direction is so outstanding that the film becomes a textbook in filmmaking. His narration and presentation are so extraordinary that they keep the audience involved right from the start till the end, not giving them even a moment to think. M.M. Keeravani’s music is excellent. The ‘Nacho nacho’ song is super-hit and will prompt crazy fans to get up from their seats and dance in the aisles. The other songs are also extremely melodious. Lyrics (Riya Mukherjee and Varun Grover) are rich and meaningful. Prem Rakshit’s choreography deserves distinction marks. The dance steps are difficult but delightful.

Overall, RRR has a fabulous first half and a slightly underwhelming, but thoroughly engaging second half. If you are a fan of either of the stars, watching RRR is a no brainer decision. In case, you are not, the grandeur, larger than life making makes it a sure shot watch.
