The film is told through the perky voice-over of Aisha, who muses out loud about the state of her parents’ “sex-life”, and other complicated family matters, including her illness, which has destroyed her ability to fight off infections. We see Aditi’s lonely, hard battle in inimical conditions in London where Aisha is being treated, with Niren back home with their older child Ishaan (Saraf), who is dealing with being the neglected sibling.

Farhan Akhtar as Niren, also pulls off a commendable performance as the supportive husband and the father whose emotions are not always on display, but is chipping away nonetheless. There is an amazing restraint in his act. Zaira Wasim breathes life into every moment she is on screen, with her vibrant energy adding the much needed poignant touch to her character.

If at all, The Sky Is Pink, scripted by Bose with Nilesh Maniyar, errs on the side of sustained cheeriness, enhanced appreciably by the presence of Chopra in the role of a mother who puts her career on hold and works determinedly to take care of Aisha.

The back and forth in time gets slightly taxing at a couple of places (and I spotted at least one factual error in the timeline – a clothing brand shop shown to exist in Delhi before the brand’s stores were launched in India), but these creases are quickly smoothened out in each case, and the shifts in time always serve to keep the film even toned.

Having an almost picture perfect cast can sometimes get in the way of a natural storytelling style but this family scores well on that front. Priyanka Chopra Jonas is restrained, mature and determined in equal measure, matched perfectly by Farhan Akhtar. Both display their acting chops to advantage as they transition from the young carefree couple to one struggling battling for their child’s survival.
