ATTACK – PART 1’s beginning is decent. The film picks up when Arjun woos Ayesha in the flight. Arjun’s accident and the scenes thereafter are moving. The scene where Arjun finally is able to move his hand after the surgery is clapworthy. The same goes for the sequence where Arjun fights the thieves. The intermission point is exciting. Post-interval, a few scenes stand out like the home minister (Rajit Kapur) insisting on agreeing to the terrorists’ demands while the army officer opposing it and Arjun fighting the baddies in the library and later in the Central Hall. The climax, as mentioned above, is an anti-climax.

John Abraham does fairly well as armyman Arjun Shergill. Jacqueline Fernandez is quite nice as airhostess Ayesha. Rakul Preet Singh is reasonably good in the role of Dr. Sabah Qureshi. Elhaam Ehsas is alright as terrorist Hamid Gul. He neither acts menacingly nor looks terrifying. Prakash Raj is earnest as V.K. Subramaniam. Rajit Kapur is not very convincing as the home minister, thanks to his weak characterisation. He comes across as a home minister who is always at sea and can’t take crucial decisions.

The hiccups along the way, be they minor and major, queer the pitch but since our hero is an insuperable force a degree of predictability seeps into the proceedings. The villain (played by Afghanistan-born British actor Elham Ehsas) does nothing that can take us by surprise as he holds hundreds of people hostage and threatens to eliminate them one by one if his demands aren’t met.

It might be interesting to note that John Abraham has gone through an entire spectrum of films in search of that one elusive blockbuster. Working in “mindless” comedies by Anees Bazmee, playing an underworld figure in Sanjay Gupta’s films. He’s also been pretty bipolar, doing Milap Zaveri’s Satyamev Jayate films on one hand, while also doing relatively grittier films like Batla House and Romeo Akbar Walter on the other. About to touch 50, Abraham has miraculously managed an acting career of nearly two decades, thanks majorly to a trunk of a torso and about two and a half expressions. He’s shown interesting initiative as a producer, backing films like Vicky Donor, Madras Cafe, Parmanu and Batla House.

John Abraham plays to his strengths which is pleasing to see after a long time. He’s not lifting cars, crushing bikes, squeezing people like lemons or shouting out some ‘powerful’ lines. He seems in control of the events here, looks in great shape, mentally and physically, playing a soldier.
