Farhad Samji’s direction is weak. He handles the grandeur and scale well and shows his brilliance in the action and dramatic moments. However, with the script being weak, the direction also gets affected. There’s little humour and too much of violence, when it should have been vice versa. The story of a dreaded gangster whose life is going to be captured on celluloid gives a deja vu of WELCOME (2007). That was a much loved film with a great script and ideally, BACHCHAN PAANDEY should have been in that league.

On the whole, Bachchhan Paandey is an average fare with a weak climax. Its business will be adversely affected due to the huge opposition of last week’s The Kashmir Files (which is still going great guns at the ticket windows) and next week’s huge release, RRR.

Bachchhan Paandey rides squarely on the starry, over-the-top presence of Akshay Kumar. He plays a coldblooded criminal with a heart-breaking backstory that is about as convincing as a snowstorm in the Sahara. He is the undisputed godfather of Baghwa and he thrives on the fear that his name evokes. When a journalist pens a profile of his and uses a cartoonish line-drawing of the criminal’s face to go with the story, the brigand takes it to heart and burns the offender alive.

Seema is mostly relegated to the background, which broke my heart because this formidable actor once played an iconic badass herself – Phoolan Devi in Bandit Queen. The narrative isn’t much kinder to Jacqueline Fernandez who plays Sophie, Bachchhan’s girlfriend. For reasons I didn’t fully comprehend, their meet-cute happens at the Pushkar mela in Rajasthan and somehow Bachchhan becomes her guide. They sing a romantic number in which, at one point, they are standing in front of waterfalls and he takes out a snake from her pants. But the good times don’t last.

The first half is used to set up the story, but doesn’t move at a desired pace. Thankfully, there are some minor conflicts and plot twists that make you look forward to the second half, however the screenplay takes forever to make a point. The music is a big letdown and only adds to the runtime.
