The editing (Dipika Kalra) is as generic and formulaic as cinematography in most part of the film. Other aesthetic elements, like the background score (Sagar Desai), the production design (Parijat Poddar), and the costume design (Darshan Jalan and Manish Tiwari) are also more from the zone of theatre. They all add to the texture of the film but do not even remotely push the envelope as far as filmmaking is concerned.

Pahwa’s chamber drama is a gentle-but-sharp excavation of family politics, of how the ties-of-blood can sometimes get diluted, but also strengthen when a life-changing event like death occurs. You notice the little touches: a neighbour whisking away her cushion from behind a mourner (kharaab ho gaya ya kho gaya toh?), one son sporting the father’s jacket (‘amma ne diya’, he tells the sharp-eyed younger brother), who gets to use the lone bathroom first (bathrooms can lead to major disputes), and finally: what next? Who is responsible for the mother, and what will happen to the big house in a town everyone has left?

We have seen weddings and what goes around them. Here’s a funeral and the tug of war that goes around it. Seema Pahwa in her directorial debut is finding her voice and addressing a substantial conversation. I am in to see her make more of these. The climax does become a little preachy, but the journey is cathartic. This is a Tehrvi you should not be missing.

RAMPRASAD KI TEHRVI is laced with some fine performances. Naseeruddin Shah is dependable in the cameo. Supriya Pathak is the best part of the lot. One can feel the pain of her character. Konkona Sen Sharma is as expected quite excellent but is let down by weak characterization. Parambrata Chatterjee delivers a great performance. Vikrant Massey is excellent. Vinay Pathak (Pankaj), Manoj Pahwa (Gajraj) and Ninad Kamat (Manoj) enhance impact with the way they have exceled in their respective roles.

The large house in Lucknow where the family gathers is a looming presence in the film. The various levels, the spiral staircase, the bedroom on the terrace – all add texture to the film’s lived-in atmosphere. The camera glides in and out of these spaces with fluidity.
