Ironically, the writers of ‘Chhalaang’ (Luv Ranjan, Aseem Arrora and Zeishan Quadri) never seem to take the leap of faith in making it an adrenaline pumping sporting spectacle. Neither does the movie explore the nuances of a sweet love story. It only flirts with the idea of making it a love triangle.

What has gone before is the unedifying sight of Montu (Rajkummar Rao), son of a seasoned lawyer (Satish Kaushik), making a mockery of his own life and work. He treats his job as just that – a job. When the principal (Ila Arun) advises him to pull up his socks, he casually rationalizes that students should concentrate on studies instead of wasting time on sports.

As competent Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub is in Chhalaang, he is shockingly sidelined for a formidable foe.

Ditto for the delightful Naman Jain, you’ll remember him as the adorable Katrina Kaif fan in Bombay Talkies, whose romantic arc is abruptly nipped in the bud to focus on a routine hubba hubba.

Music doesn’t work except for ‘Le Chhalaang’. It has an anthem-like feel and is in sync with the film’s mood in the second half. ‘Teri Choriyaan’ is okay. ‘Care Ni Karda’ appears just before the end credits while ‘Deedar De’ is missing. Hitesh Sonik’s background score is exhilarating.

But the film’s real winner is its terrific ensemble cast—Satish Kaushik, Saurabh Shukla, Ila Arun, Jatin Sarna, Baljinder Kaur and Naman Jain. Out of these, Kaushik, Arun and Kaur are too good in their respective spaces. Truth be told, it’s these actors who have made Chhalaang an enjoyable, non-preachy film. The film definitely belongs to these actors more than the lead cast.
