The background score, especially, in the action sequences is stimulating and the best work of composer James Newton Howard. His fourth collaboration with Disney, after a long time, is definitely worth the wait. Unlike the previous Disney outings like Frozen and Moana, here the action takes precedence over music. The only song, ‘Lead the Way,’ (written and performed by Jhené Aiko) rolls with the end-credits.

The last dragon Sisu (voiced by Awkwafina), leave a gem which then divides the people of Kumandra against each other. People from six regions named after the dragon’s body parts (such as Fang, Talon and more). But the gem lies with Heart protected by Raya (voiced by Kelly Marie Tran) and her father, Chief Benja (voiced by Daniel Dae Kim). People from every region want that gem, but Benja and Raya only want to unite everyone to fight to bring back the dragons.

Call it an act of repentance on Disney’s part for throwing Kelly Marie Tran under the bus, or call it another excuse for Alan Tudyk to make animal noises for a couple of hours in exchange of equity, but nothing should take away from the fact that Raya and the Last Dragon is another step in the right direction for the Mouse House. And in a happy coincidence, it might just be the most ‘unremakable’ film that the studio has produced in a while.

A Disney film carries considerable nostalgic baggage. That’s why the studio has been mining its existing IP, instead of telling new stories. 2016 was perhaps the last great year for the Mouse House’s animation outfit, having given us two gems in Zootopia and Moana. Five years later, Disney makes its first foray into creating new IP with Raya and the Last Dragon. While Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada’s film is by no measure a dud, it does lack that intangible “it” factor that elevated past films to classic status.

The premise that sets up the events is anything but unique. The fictional world of Kumandra is made up of five different landmasses named Fang, Talon, Tail, Spine, and Heart, and they come together conveniently to form the shape of — you guessed it — a dragon. When the people of these five kingdoms fight for the much treasured Dragon Gem, they inadvertently break it. Unluckily for them, the gem’s magic is the only force that stops a plague called Druun that terrorised them a few centuries back.
