Rao makes these scenes count for whatever they are worth but the inconsistent script – screenwriters Mrighdeep Singh Lamba and Gautam Mehra are hard-pressed to give the flighty plot premise a smooth and steady path – lets him down at crucial junctures. An earthy lingo, a wayward diction and an icky demeanour lend his and co-actor Varun Sharma’s personas an air of harmless insouciance, one of the more effective elements that Roohi manages to conjure up.

The film has its share of laughs with references made to moments from iconic films – for instance, Rose “letting” Jack die in the iconic Titanic and the unforgettable ‘palat’ moment in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. The film, written by Mrighdeep Singh Lamba Gautam Mehra, is replete with well-written one-liners, which land smoothly on most occasions.

Some parts of Roohi are, no doubt, genuinely funny, (spoilers ahead in this paragraph) my favourite episode being the one in which Kattanni tries to mimic the exorcisms he has seen in Hollywood films by spouting lines often delivered by Christian priests in those stories and touching what he describes as a “plus sign” to Roohi’s forehead. A “plus sign” – got it? (Spoiler alert ends)

Mrighdeep Singh Lamba and Gautam Mehra’s story is interesting and novel. The writers try their best to bring something new to the table. Mrighdeep Singh Lamba and Gautam Mehra’s screenplay, however, is interesting only in parts. A few scenes are exceptional and bring the house down. But the serious portions don’t make the desired impact. Mrighdeep Singh Lamba and Gautam Mehra’s dialogues are witty. But the dialect is too authentic and is incomprehensible at many places.

Written by Mrighdeep Singh Lamba and Gautam Mehra, Roohi is totally about spontaneity and a solid beginning. Though both Rao and Sharma are in their favourite zone, but their back and forth and punchlines evoke laughs. The first 15-20 minutes of the film have more spoken words than an entire Vishal Bhardwaj film. Director Hardik Mehta (Amdavad Ma Famous, Kaamyaab) has got his hands on the pulse of the young audiences. He knows when to go for the oneliners and when to use overpowering background score to enhance the charm of a jungle and a funny ghost situation.
