The childhood portions of Shakeela catch your attention. In some ways, you are reminded of Ramya Krishnan’s Web series Queen that released in 2019.

Of course, that told the story of a young woman who became a top actress in mainstream cinema and moved on to politics. Here, it’s a journey into the R-rated zone for the young woman.

Eventually, the climactic clash is between a Shakeela biopic and the top male superstar’s latest cop drama. But even in success – Shakeela, at the peak of her career, spawns a genre of her own – she is repeatedly reminded that there is a price to be paid.

Folklore has it that Shakeela’s R-rated films became a threat to hero-led, good vs evil family dramas and those male heroes took it upon themselves to bring her down. The film touches upon these points liberally, but it doesn’t move you. The dialogues seem clunky too and the supporting actors — barring this pair — are forgettable and ordinary.

Music has no scope, although a film should have had a nice, retro soundtrack. ‘Tera Ishq Satave’, played in opening credits, is forgettable. The random placing of intimate scenes look forced. Even ‘Taaza’ is not memorable and the same goes for the romantic track. Veer Samarth’s background score is slightly better.

The music is average and easily forgettable. The era of nineties and early 2000s is depicted through modest production values, but the film shows some of the most scenic and hitherto unexplored beautifully misty locations of southern India. Despite the film’s overtly racy subject, ‘Shakeela’ manages to put out (no pun intended), a decently aesthetic product.
