Abhishek Sharma’s direction is lovely. He has extracted very good work from out of his actors. His narrative style is sharp and he is able to entertain the audience right from the word ‘go’. Music (Javed-Mohsin) is good. The ‘Basanti’ and title songs are catchy. The other songs are also good. Lyrics (Danish Sabri, Kunaal Verma, Akshay Shinde and Mellow D) are quite nice.

Rajkummar Rao is good as always playing the unambitious PT teacher, but his act of a small-town boy next door is far too repetitive. Perhaps also because the stories from rural India are such a dominant part of his filmography. Also, his rigidly still hair looks kinda odd, even when he is getting down and dirty on the sports field. Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub in his athletic avatar and sporting a moustache, fits the bill as the competitive sports teacher.

It is difficult for an actor to pass himself off as the son of an actress who, in real life, is in the same age bracket. While Supriya Pilgaonkar is delightful as the feisty matron whose beauty parlour shares space with Madhu Mangal’s detective agency, there are times that the duet jars a touch. But the two actors are so good at what they do that, after a point, one stops being overly piqued by the discrepancy.

Somewhere in there is an attempt to stand up for women who want to do their own thing. Shaikh wants to be a DJ, but has to hide the fact. Why? Because DJs work in night spots where there is drink and dancing? Who writes this stuff? And why are we watching this in 2020?

The cast is filled with artistes who have a solid track record, but Dosanjh gets SPMB’s best lines and delivers the best comedic performance, overshadowing even a veteran like Bajpayee who gets equal space in the script. Supriya Pilgaonkar playing Madhu’s mother and Manuj Sharma as Suraj’s friend are as adorable as Dosanjh in the film, and I do wish they had been given more to do.
