Assuming you would agree when we say that Bhumi is a natural and this movie was no exception to that phenomenon, the versatile actress was out of her element as the feisty ghost – is it the meek writing? Who’s to say! Karan Kapadia has a Swades-esque moment, he was in the US, following which he comes back to the village of Panna and works towards the betterment of his countrymen. As Shakti, he is angry, a straight shooter and has only limited screen space.

Kuldeep Mamania’s cinematography is impressive. The lensman handles the grandeur very well. Tariq Umar Khan’s production design is spectacular. The haveli is very well built and looks straight out of life. Priyanka Mundada’s costumes are appropriate. Nishant Abdul Khan’s action gets quite gory, especially in the second half. Pixelloid Studios’s VFX is okay. Unnikrishnan P P’s editing could have been better as the film is way too long.

There’s no question what territory we’re in once these bad apples decide on the venue for their off-grid interrogation: the titular abandoned mansion, rumoured to be stalked by the vengeful ghost of a slain queen. “Her thirst for blood is insane!,” yelps the property’s wild-eyed, no-armed watchman, offering both a potential tagline for poster designers and a handy warning for everybody else. Abandon any expectation of subtlety, all ye who enter here.

The main issue of the film is its clunky middle which is as confusing as it is irritating. There are many similar scenes which add no value and should have been easily trimmed. They make you lose your interest in the proceedings. Durgamati is also too loud in several portions and some of its dialogues just put you off. Most of the horror scenes are not scary enough.

While Thaman’s background music in Bhaagamathie was a character in itself, Jakes Bejoy fails to recreate the same magic in Durgamati. Talking about the songs, ‘Baras Baras’ makes for a soothing hear, but the visuals fall short of being impactful. ‘Heer’ has forgettable lyrics.
